Let’s begin by defining veganism and then the origins of veganism.
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products. For beginners in this lifestyle, it is usually about diet. For more committed individuals it is a holistic philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals.
A person who follows the diet or philosophy is known as a vegan and people often ask me about distinctions that may be made between several categories of veganism as well as veganism vs vegetarianism.
Donald Watson coined the term “vegan” in 1944 when he co-founded the Vegan Society in the UK. At first he used it to mean a “non-dairy vegetarian”, and by May 1945 vegans explicitly abstained from “eggs, honey; and animals’ milk, butter and cheese”. From 1951, the Society defined it as “the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals”. There was some interest in veganism when I attended the first world vegetarian congress in 1976 however interest in veganism has increased in the 2010s, especially in the latter half. In the last decade more vegan stores opened and vegan options have become increasingly available in restaurants and supermarkets worldwide.
Dietary vegans, also known as “strict vegetarians“, refrain from consuming eggs, poultry, fiish, meat, and dairy products, or any animal-derived substances. A “moral vegetarian”, an also known as ethical vegan, is an individual extends the philosophy into other areas of their lives, besides just diet. These individuals also opposes the use of animals for almost any other purpose.
Another term is “environmental veganism“. The issue of veganism and climate change, and veganism and the environment is an important issue. This generally relates to the avoidance of animal products on the premise that the industrial farming of animals is environmentally damaging and unsustainable.
So why is veganism healthy? For one, it is denser than other diets in most of the essential nutrients. I am often asked not only about what is veganism, but what are the best vegan foods. I favor fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouts. I also would take supplements for Vitamins B12.

The Benefits of The Vegan Diet
I have also found that a vegan diet can help with weight loss. Some evidence suggests that veganism works especially well in the short term.
Vegan diets tend to be higher in dietary fiber, magnesium, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, and phytochemicals
Vegan diets tend to be lower in dietary energy, saturated fat, cholesterol, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, and vitamin B12.
There are many pros and cons of veganism but vegan benefits, why veganism is bad, definitely out weight the negative points. Some croitics point out that as a result of the elimination of all animal products, a vegan diet may lead to nutritional deficiencies that nullify any beneficial effects and may cause serious health issues. Some of these deficiencies can only be prevented through the choice of fortified foods or the regular intake of dietary supplements. Vitamin B12 supplementation is especially important because its deficiency causes blood disorders and potentially irreversible neurological damage. Still a basic multivitamin can solve this problems and the overall benefits are worth the extra-effort for those who accept the vegan lifestyle.

As of 2020 in the United States, there were numerous vegan egg substitutes available, including products used for “scrambled” eggs, cakes, cookies, and doughnuts. Baking powder, silken (soft) tofu, mashed potato, bananas, flaxseeds, and aquafaba from chickpeas can also be used as egg substitutes.

When I was in high school, basketball was my passion. The only problem was that I was 6’1” and not only could I not dunk, I couldn’t even touch the rim.
