Conspiracy Theories on Banking and Who Runs the World
Q. Lewis, I have friends who believe in all types, of what is generally called “conspiracy theory”. They say the finances of the world are controlled by a central bank, and that this bank is controlled by 60 ultra-wealthy families. What do you think? Does the central bank exist? If it does is it controlled by these rich families?
A. It is a good question but actually the wrong question. The person who has this point of view seems to have a cynical superficial understanding of how the global economy works, and how power, influence, competition, and hierarchical thinking is expressed.
Let, me explain. Every country has its own “central” bank. In order to do business internationally, these central banks belong to various banking networks. Just as there are networks for barter, gun owners, pot growers, GLBTQ2Spirit, etc. banks also belong to a series of different networks. Two banking networks are The World Bank, International Monetary Fund. There are other networks. I suggest you actually research the history of banking to get a perspective on your question.
Next…Do money barons control the country and the world? This is usually the assumption people make when they think there is a central bank. To begin with, keep in mind there is no formal definition for what a money baron is. I am not avoiding your question, I just can’t answer it since I’m not sure what you mean. There is no such thing for instance as “The International Association of Money Barons.”
Now let’s get to the intention of your question. Throughout history people have been competitive and hierarchical. Some sit on the top of the heap. They have land, or weapons, or better-looking wives or husbands, or royal parentage (Queen Elizabeth I), etc. These are the people who run the tribe. Can 20 or thirty people run the world as what you call “Robber barons?” Actually no! This is the reason why it cannot happen – it is called “Crab in a Bucket” thinking.
If you take, let’s say the 60 richest families in the world, you can be sure each has a different interest. They may be nice people or evil, greedy assholes. Whichever they are, they will likely focus on different profit centers than the other evil greedy assholes (and some of these are nice people and philanthropists). They will not usually collaborate – that’s not how they think. They will compete and drag each other down, as they pursue their own interests.
I use movies to teach this. The movie I use to make this point about power, hierarchy and common interest is “Quest for Fire.” This is the trailer. Yes, it is just a movie, but it is based on serious research on how people compete and also cooperate.
So the answer to your question is, yes, the uber-rich do manipulate the world, but there are many thousands of uber-rich who have competing interests, and they are unlikely to agree on anything, not even fashion, or the best ball to attend at Palm Beach (which I might add is the philanthropy capital of the world.)
These are serious and important questions you are asking here. If you disagree with my perspective let me know and please do so with evidence-based facts. Fake facts, cognitive bias, and obvious logical fallacies just give me unnecessary stress.
