Q. Define The Meaning of the Word “Synergy”?



For those seeking to be happier, more effective, and to gain greater self-aware through information.

Q. I have heard the word, ”synergy” a number of times. What does it mean?

A. Synergy is a process where distinct elements – often people, places, or things interact – and through this interaction, something arises that did not exist previously in any of these distinct elements, and which is ultimately greater than the sum of those elements or parts.

Initially we cannot predict what is likely to happen when people, places, or things interact. This is way we say it is beyond thought. Synergy is what arises when creativity, innovation, intuition, and critical thinking merge and influence each other.



Over time as an individual becomes ever more self-aware, and mindful they will find the boundaries between creative, intuitive, and critical thinking slowly dissolving.  Here a synergy comes into play where each way of thinking expands and magnifies the other two. In Our Work a person who can live in this state is said to be “Awakened”.


If I was asked to describe my work as a peak performance and life coach  in two words I would say “actualized intention.” Actualized intention is often described by the Chinese words, Wu Wei – which essentially means the action that has no action. Actualized intention transcends any intellectual or intuitive processes and yet, it integrates intangible and logical factors that contribute to the overall quality of an ongoing process of introspection and self-assessment. Here at the moment, one is ready, willing and able to immediately act on a goal or vision. Here, through the merging of intuitive and critical thinking, it takes place instantly and spontaneously, without discipline or willpower.


The great German philosopher, Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, described this idea in this way:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.  Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; at the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.  All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.  A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.  Whatever you can do or dream, you can begin it.  Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.  Begin it now.”


One approach to this state of being is to dedicate a minimum of 15 minutes a day to the formation of a habit and continue this pattern consistently. I have found with my students that in time, this pattern is ingrained in the mind, and begins to dominate and even diminish previous, less productive habits. The obvious next step is to embrace this new habit and continue repeating it. By doing this over a period of time, it is likely to even become uncomfortable when one engages in old habits, and extremely pleasurable to continue doing the new one. This approach can be applied to a physical pattern, as well as emotional and mental ones.  An important book that pioneered this idea was Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr.  Maxwell Maltz. I recommend his ideas if you wish to explore Wu-Wei from a Western perspective. This will surely take you far beyond the basic concept of the law of attraction that has become quite popular in the personal development community.

Today, the majority of monasteries, religious retreats as well as spiritually based meditation and educational centers are ill-equipped to offer students teachings and even an environment that might support the level of understanding of “synergy.” In order for a person to truly understand something this profound, they must be in possession of certain critical skills. These are skills for living a balanced spiritual life in a world built on competition, hierarchal behavior, suffering, ego and struggle based social interaction. With these skills at hand, and applied, any individual will soon possess authentic wisdom.
