Trump or Biden – Who is a Bigger Liar?

What is a fact? Facts can help you make wiser choices and help you to survive, and prosper in the game of life.

Q. Lewis, since all politicians lie, who is a bigger liar Donald Trump or Joe Biden?

A. Great question, especially since the presidential election is right around the corner. To begin with, all humans lie at some time, so politicians aren’t unique in this regard. Concerning Trump and Biden, Trump is a much bigger liar. But don’t take my word for it. Trump essentially says so himself.

I’ll tell you about the statistics on this fact and how to read them at the end of this blog. But first, let’s review how to define a fact. How can we know that something is actually a fact?

Trump or Biden? Who does it more?

This might seem like a simple question, but the answer is not so straightforward. The Macquarie Dictionary defines a fact as ‘what has really happened or is the case; truth; reality’. This implies that facts are objective, as opposed to opinions that are subjective.

You can easily lie about the future but not so easily lie about the past

Here are a number of points to keep in mind when isolating facts.

  1. It can’t be a fact if it can’t be verified.
  2. The general test for a statement of fact is verifiability. With verifiability, one must be able to check or demonstrate that a statement or piece of data is true, accurate, or justified.
  3. A specific test is, whether it can be demonstrated to correspond to or is based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.
  4. Another specific test is deductive proof (such as 2+2=4) that is not just a matter of opinion. For instance, the proposition ‘It is raining’ describes the fact that it actually is raining. The rain that falls can be objectively measured in a rain gauge. Some would argue deductive reasoning is an important life skill. It allows you to take information from two or more statements and draw a logically sound conclusion. This is particularly important at this time when we need to determine with a politician is lying or not.

Let’s explore deductive reasoning more closely.  This type of reasoning moves from generalities to specific conclusions. Perhaps the biggest stipulation is that the statements upon which the conclusion is drawn need to be true.

If they’re accurate, then the conclusion stands to be sound and accurate. Let’s explore some deductive reasoning examples. See if you would’ve drawn the same conclusions yourself.

An opinion is a judgment, viewpoint, or statement about matters commonly considered to be subjective, such as ‘It is raining too much’. As Plato said: ‘opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance’.  An opinion is never a fact unless there is evidence presented.

I’m interested in what you believe to be so if you can give me facts, rather than opinions.

Here as promised  are the basics concerning lying politicians

According to Trump.com, Joe Biden has made 33 False or Misleading statements in the campaign.

Now let’s look at Donald Trump.

According to an article by the “Hill” an unbiased media outlet, President Trump has made 16,241 false or misleading claims during his three years in office. This is based on The Washington Post’s Fact Checker.

I actually sought a conservative outlet to count Trump’s lies but there were none who bothered to count them.

In 2019, Trump reportedly more than doubled the number of false or misleading claims he made compared to his first two years in office combined. Trump made 8,155 suspect claims in 2019, surpassing his 7,688 from 2017 and 2018 combined, the newspaper reported.

It added that the president averaged more than 22 false or misleading claims a day in 2019.

If you are a Trump supporter and believe the Washington Post is biased keep this in mind. If the Post is 95% incorrect this would mean Trump only lied, 812.05 times, 300 times more than Biden

Of course, these are only outright lies and does not include half-truths. For instance, Trump says he added jobs than Obama. Yea, kinda sorta, if you ignore the details…

The average monthly gain so far under Trump is 182,000 jobs. During the last 36 months under Obama, employers were adding an average of 224,000 jobs a month.

In February 2020, the Labor Department reported that employers added a fairly robust 225,000 jobs in January. But it also made some revisions to past data, which lowered many previous job growth estimates. While some of the revisions go all the way back to the last century, most of the changes to data took place during 2018 and 2019. So the revisions reduced the gains during Obama’s final three years by 47,000 jobs, but it reduced the gains during Trump’s tenure by a total of 354,000 jobs.

It is a fact that The job record under Trump is far better than the job record during Obama’s first 35 months in office when the economy lost 805,000 jobs. But, now let’s dig a little deeper.  Obama took office in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression (1929). In the final job reading before Obama took office, the economy lost 784,000 jobs in that month alone. And it continued to lose jobs throughout the rest of 2009 before Obama’s economic policies went into effect.

By comparison, Trump took office with the labor market in relatively good shape, with unemployment at 4.7%, and a string of 76 straight months of job gains. The labor market has clearly continued to improve. Unemployment of 3.6% in January is nearly at a 50-year low now. But it is a continuation of an improving job market, not the turnaround that occurred in the early years of the Obama administration.

I am not telling you who to vote for, and this blog is not about any agenda. It is about facts.

The conclusion using Trump’s own statistics (Trump.com) is that he lies a whole lot more than Joe Biden.
