What is the meaning of life, and how Applied Game Theory can help you to survive, and prosper

Q. Lewis, this year, as in many recent years the Nobel Prize in economics went to two game theorists. Explain the meaning of game theory and Harrison’s Applied Game Theory? Also, explore how I and my business can use your system, Harrison’s Applied Game Theory to become more successful.

A.  To begin, game theory is a way of thinking of the world as a game-theoretical framework, especially concerning social and business scenarios among competing players.

A. In some respects, game theory is the science of strategy, or at least the optimal decision-making of independent, competing, rational individuals in any strategic setting.

Q.What are the elements of game theory?

A. Traditionally game theory was studied in relation to economics, politics, and in the military. Simply put, examples of strategic settings might be a board or video game, a playing field, or a defined environment in daily life such as the workplace, or even the supermarket.

Q. What should everyone know about game theory?

A. Developed in the 1940s, the key pioneers of game theory were mathematicians John von Neumann and economist Oskar Morgenstern.   Their pioneering 1944 book Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, considered cooperative games of several players. Much further work was done by John Nash (the subject of the book and film A Beautiful Mind), and many others who have won the Nobel Prize for their work in game theory.

Q. What is the point of Game Theory?

A. To maximize your potential or the potential of your business, no matter what the situation, or who your competitors may be. The key to game theory is that one player’s benefiting or winning (the payoff) in a game environment is contingent on the strategy implemented by the other player(s).

For interactions between people to be considered a game one must be able to identify:

  • the players’ identities,

  • preferences,

  • available strategies,

  • how these strategies affect the outcome.

Depending on the model (the type of game), various other requirements or assumptions may also be necessary, such as the length of the game, or blocks of time in the game (baseball innings, hockey periods, time limitations in speed chess, etc.)

Game theory has a wide range of applications, including psychology, evolutionary biology, war, politics, economics, and business. Despite its many advances, game theory is still a young and developing science.

In the world, we presently live in much of what each of us does daily require EEPPSA (effective, efficient, precise, productive, and self-aware) decision making. One of the limitations in achieving EEPPSA and applying classical concepts of game theory (based on rational thinking)  is that most humans are not as rational as we might like them to be. In fact, most humans often act irrationally and emotionally. The most skilled among us can present or frame our thoughts and behaviors in a seemingly rational form, but under the surface may be irrational nonetheless.

Though some approaches to game theory address this constraint most do not. There is much focus within the academic game theory community on precision in decision-making.

In the first decade of this century, under the personal guidance of Harvey Slatin,  a renowned engineer and mathematician, friend, and peer of John von Neumann, I explored and studied ways of developing strategies. Many of these strategies explored obstacles such as cognitive biases and logical fallacies. I also explore the influence of emotion and intuition in forming strategic-game-based thinking.

Through this process, I developed and codified a system named Harrison’s (Holistic) Applied Game Theory. Known as HAGT (pronounced “hacked”) this is an umbrella term for hundreds of game and gamer-based approaches to problem-solving, and self-awareness. HAGT is strongly influenced by John von Neumann’s original ideas concerning gamer-thinking as well as economic game theory. HAGT expands von Neumann’s seminal work by combining logic, rational thought, deep introspection, and intuition. These processes create practical, efficient, precise, and productive strategies for solving many everyday problems. The goal of HAGT is to enable anyone to create a meaningful life, form collaborative relationships, and make the best decisions.

My personal passion in life is sharing game theory and HAGT. This is because I believe they are the best and most accessible approaches to maximizing personal and business development, at the lowest possible economic, physical, mental, and emotional costs.

I achieve this goal through corporate consulting, executive-personal-team coaching,  seminars, workshops, and presentations, and through my online courses.  Learn more about these at  AskLewisgametheory.com

As was mentioned earlier the 2020 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to brilliant thinkers who have studied and expanded game theory concepts. Robert Butler Wilson, Jr. (born May 16, 1937) is an American economist and the Adams Distinguished Professor of Management, Emeritus at Stanford University.

He was jointly awarded the Prize together with his Stanford colleague and former student Paul R. Milgrom for improvements to auction theory and inventions of new auction formats.

Two more of his students, Alvin E. Roth and Bengt Holmström, are also Nobel Laureates in their own right.
