What is the meaning of life, and how can you use the power of patience to not only survive but prosper

Q.Lewis, What is the most important strategic tool for a master of applied game theory?

A. Plain and simple the best strategy, is patience. I was recently speaking to a group of influential and powerful young Hedge Fund executives. We were exploring the biggest flaws in their investment strategies. Time and time again the word that was spoken was “Impatience. I asked the group to give me a patience definition, but few could do it. One even talked about the patience card game (solitaire).

Most of us know about the idea of being patient but few of us actually know what that means. As young people, we probably heard it said that patience is a virtue. The patience game is an essential element of Harrison’s Applied Game Theory. Sadly, some folks have no patience and it costs them.

One of the reasons I love listening to the songwriter Leonard Cohen is that the themes in may of his songs focus on introspection and patience. You can hear it in The Famous Blue Raincoat, and his classic Hallelujah.

I also remember watching the old television show Kung Fu and having the master say to the student “patience grasshopper.” A patience synonym would be; composure, stability, self-possession; submissiveness, sufferance,  indefatigability, persistence, and assiduity.

For the person who seeks a calmfaith-filled inspiring life, a life rich with an inspirational-attitude; a motivational-life filled with opportunityoptimism, and positive thinking, patience is the key to the best life-lessons. You don’t need to read bible verses about patience to understand the benefits available from this trait. There are a number of celebrities named patience including the actress Patience Ozokwor, and the model Patience Silva.

So let’s begin with a deeper understanding of the meaning of patience.

Patience (or forbearance) is the ability to endure difficult circumstances such as perseverance in the face of delay; tolerance of provocation without responding in annoyance /anger; or forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. Patience is the level of endurance one can have before negativity. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast. Antonyms include hastiness and impetuousness.

Here are a few famous patience quotes.

“Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.”

― Moliere

“He that can have patience can have what he will.”
― Benjamin Franklin

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.”
― Aristotle

Of course, there are many quotes about patience and if you take the time and are patient there is much you can learn from them.

In psychology and in cognitive neuroscience, patience is studied as a decision-making problem, involving the choice of either a small reward in the short-term, versus a more valuable reward in the long-term.

Patience of human users in the online world has been the subject of much recent scientific research. In a 2012 study involving tens of millions of users who watched videos on the Internet, Krishnan and Sitaraman show that online users lose patience in as little as two seconds while waiting for their chosen video to start playing.[4] The study also shows that users who are connected to the Internet at faster speeds are less patient than their counterparts connected at slower speeds, demonstrating a link between the human expectation of speed and human patience. These and other scientific studies of patience have led many social commentators to conclude that the rapid pace of technology is rewiring humans to be less and less patient.

In Human, All Too Human, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche argued that “being able to wait is so hard that the greatest poets did not disdain to make the inability to wait the theme of their poetry.” He notes that “Passion will not wait”, and gives the example of cases of duels, in which the “advising friends have to determine whether the parties involved might be able to wait a while longer. If they cannot, then a duel is reasonable [because]…to wait would be to continue suffering the horrible torture of offended honor…”.

One cannot speak about patience without also exploring the concept of impatience. Examples of impatience can be seen in common social situations, such as:

  • Traffic – for example, a car at a stoplight honking at the car in front of it immediately after the light has turned green or honking during a traffic jam which is unlikely to unclog the road. Impatience may be a contributing factor to road rage.
  • Complaints or rude behavior while waiting for food at a restaurant
  • Anger at waiting on hold for telephone service and support

Larry Wall, the inventor of the Perl programming language, declared impatience a virtue which leads programmers to write programs that serve their need.

I appreciate you reading this blog and thank you for your patience

I leave you with the video and lyrics to a beautiful song Patience (not nearly as  intense as Guns n’ Roses Patience)

Lyrics

Has it really been that long?
Did I count the days wrong?
Did we just go ’round and ’round
All the way to step one?

They would ask me all the time
Every time the show’s up
“So what you doin’ with your life”
It ain’t givin’ up

Just growin’ up in stages
(Lay down, low down)
Livin’ life in phases
Another season changes
And still my days are shapeless

It’s always, “Drive straight, don’t be late”
‘Cause time waits for no one
I should be flying straight, with no delay
‘Cause time takes from everyone

I’ve been waiting here
Waiting for the day to come
Take us to the place
Takin’ us where we have gone

They would ask me all the time
Showin’ up in ages
“So what you doin’ with your life?”
Call it givin’ up

I’m just growin’ up in stages
(Lay down, low down)
Livin’ life in phases
Another season changes
And still my ways are aimless, I know
We’re growin’ up in stages
And I’m runnin’ out of pages
Growin’ up

It’s always, “Drive straight, don’t be late”
‘Cause time waits for no one
I should be flying straight, with no delay
‘Cause time takes from everyone
