Q. Lewis, I was very motivated watching the NBA finals. The Raptors made it into the NBA playoffs again (I live in Toronto). Watching these incredible athletes has motivated me to start a fitness program. There is just so much out there to choose from. Do you have any suggestions concerning specialized exercise equipment, the best breathing exercise, or how to create a program of strength-building (anaerobic exercise) – stretching – and aerobic exercise (cardiovascular exercise)?

A.  Mental, emotional, and physical exercise is essential to our well-being. When I speak of physical fitness I am referring to a state of healthand well-beingand, more specifically, the ability to perform aspects of sports, occupations and daily activities. Physical fitness is generally achieved through sufficient rest, moderate-vigorous physical exercise, proper nutrition, breathing exercises, and mindful meditation.

 

 

 

 

Among the benefits of exercise are:

  • Help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age.
  • Help you control your weight. …
  • Reduce your risk of heart diseases. …
  • Help your body manage blood sugar and insulin levels. …
  • Help you quit smoking. …
  • Improve your mental health and mood. …

I wasn’t much of an exercise buff when I was a kid. I remember doing isotonic exercise and isometric exercise in the gym in high school. In recent years I’ve developed an interest in somatics. Somatics is a fitness and exercise practice that uses the mind-body connection to help you survey your internal self and listen to signals your body sends about areas of pain, discomfort, or imbalance. These practices allow you to access more information about the ways you hold on to your experiences in your body. My personal fitness program includes Pilates, the Feldenkrais Method, and specialized exercise equipment to aid in my jumping ability. (I talk about this equipment and programs at the end of this blog).

To create a solid program you do not need free weights or expensive exercise machines. These are no longer necessary, and if you still want to use them it is easy to find used exercise equipment. In recent years fitness buffs have integrated the exercise ball into their workouts and I have begun to do so as well along with vertical leap training.

Getting started with an exercise program is easy if you know how to use a fitness blender for nutrition-rich smoothies, a basic exercise mat, and exercise bands for strength building. One of the new trends is the plank exercise – an isometric core strength exercise that involves maintaining a position similar to a push-up for the maximum possible time, I begin my day with a good morning exercise with includes tai chi and yoga.

 

Let’s do a short exploration of the history of fitness and exercise. Before the industrial revolution, fitness was defined as the capacity to carry out the day’s activities without undue fatigue. However, with automation and changes in lifestyle, fitness is now considered a measure of the mind and the body’s ability to function efficiently, effectively, and productively in work and leisure activities. It is also a measure of holistic wellness, the ability to respond to emergency situations, and the ability to resist hypokinetic diseases.

 

 

 

 

A comprehensive fitness program needs to be personalized to an individual. Such a program usually typically focuses on age, one or more specific skills, and or health-related needs such as bone health. Many sources cite mental, social, and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness. This is often presented in textbooks as a triangle made up of three points, which represent physical, emotional, and mental fitness. Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle or aging. Working out can also help some people sleep better and possibly alleviate some mood disorders in certain individuals.

Developing research has demonstrated that many of the benefits of exercise are mediated through the role of skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ. That is, contracting muscles release multiple substances known as myokines, which promote the growth of new tissue, tissue repair, and various anti-inflammatory functions, which in turn reduce the risk of developing various inflammatory diseases.

When I was in high school, basketball was my passion. The only problem was that I was 6’1” and not only could I not dunk, I couldn’t even touch the rim.

When I heard about the Wesley Snipes/Woody Harrelson movie “White Men Can’t Jump,” I thought it was about me. Geeze, If I only knew then what I know now.

 

One of the greatest obstacles for many athletes, especially in basketball is underdeveloped vertical jumping ability. Luckily, today, there is a Secret to being a great vertical jumper and I’m going to tell you what that secret is right now!

It’s strengthening your elastic muscle fibers. That’s it. Elastic fibers are bundles of proteins found in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue. Why these specific fibers? Because elastic fibers can stretch up to 1.5 times their length, and snap back to their original length when relaxed. Of course, the next natural question is, “How do I strengthen my elastic muscle fibers?”

Doing this requires very important and not easy to access information.

One thing is for sure – you can’t just go to the gym and develop some intuitive workout to strengthen these elastic fibers. You need to develop these fibers systematically.
