Q. Lewis, with all this cancel culture running rampant, I can’t even tell what a racist is. From some of what I read I seem to be a racist. I’m confused. Please clarify all of this?
A. This blog and my response to you was motivated by something I read about the recently suspended NASCAR driver Kyle Larson. He said the “N” word and paid a heavy price for doing so. The full article, concerning what Larson he did is at the end of the next paragraph.
Though on the surface racism definitions are easy to grab onto, as you go deeper the definition of racism can be a slippery slope. For instance, there is reverse racism, systemic racism, environmental racism, structural racism, scientific racism, and system racism. The question how do all of these different concepts provide answers and solutions to the reality and problem of racism in America. So going back to our racism definition this brings us to the question as to how does a person with good intention define and address their internalized racism.
Here is the article I mentioned
My point here is though on the surface racism definitions are easy to grab onto, as you go deeper the definition of racism can be a slippery slope. For instance, there is reverse racism, systemic racism, environmental racism, structural racism, scientific racism, and system racism. The question of how do all of these different concepts provide answers and solutions to the reality and problem of racism in America. So going back to our racism definition this brings us to the question as to how does a person with good intention define and address their internalized racism.
Why? On April 13, CGR suspended Larson indefinitely without pay after it became known that during an iRacing event the day before, Larson stated: “You can’t hear me? Hey, nigger,” believing he had lost communication. Shortly after Ganassi’s announcement, NASCAR also suspended him indefinitely and ordered him to complete sensitivity training before he is allowed to race again.
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is an American auto racing sanctioning and operating company that is best known for stock-car racing. The privately owned company was founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948, and his son, Jim France, has been the CEO since August 6, 2018. The company is headquartered in Daytona Beach, Florida. Each year, NASCAR sanctions over 1,500 races at over 100 tracks in 48 US states as well as in Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
It seems that on the surface, at least, Larson is seeking to authentically make amends for his mistake. Of course in this often disingenuous, and cynical cancel culture, his attempts might seem inauthentic to some. Of course, who among us has not said the wrong thing, in the wrong way, at the wrong time, and the wrong place, to the wrong person?
It’s as if Kyle Larson just found out about racism. Larson has hired a personal diversity coach, Doug Harris, CEO of The Kaleidoscope Group (https://kgdiversity.com/about-doug-harris/ that specializes in diversity and inclusion consulting.
Of course one can’t speak about NASCAR and Kyle Larson without speaking about William Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. Wallace (born October 8, 1993) is an American professional stock car racing driver. He competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series. Wallace is noted for being one of the most successful African American drivers in the history of NASCAR had has been an important voice in changing NASCAR culture from Confederate Flags to inclusion
Of course, we can talk about ending racism all we want, but without action what does it all mean. So, if you don’t see yourself as a racist but are a little clueless or confused about all this, here is an article on how to make a less racist more inclusive job listing:
Here is another article about progressive and liberals debating about the concept of anti-racism.
